That's why I was hoping the Apple router would be much easier to use. Can I simply plug this into the Netgear (or other non-Apple) router? Or do I need a windows-based formatted ext hd? I have a D-Link DIR-862L ac router but it won't recognize the Mac-formatted hd, and the ui is brutal. I have an existing OWC ext hd already formatted for Mac with TM backups and storage. And I'm sure there are others (I tossed my old AEBS in favor of the R7000, a much better router). Meanwhile, you could get say a Netgear ac router with removable antennas, good support, good radios, USB 3 connection for your hard drive (and another one for a printer), Time Machine support, all for about $100 (Netgear 6400). ![]() So I can't actually use them for TM backups? I know it's 2013 tech but all of our devices are wireless N anyway. The 5th gen N models? How are they bricked exactly? They're still selling the 6th gen tower models new. WiFi issues can be caused by many factors, such as a WiFi network scheme, the router settings, and so on. Many of them complained their Mac won’t connect to WiFi while their friend’s Mac doesn’t have that problem. ![]() Why buy old tech? Who knows if Airport Utility will continue to work with subsequent system updates? The 5.6 version stopped working and essentially that bricked lots of still useful Apple base stations and expresses. Mac WiFi Problems are one of the common issues for Mac users.
